The 21st Century Learning Initiative's essential purpose is to facilitate the emergence of new approaches to learning that draw upon a range of insights into the human brain, the functioning of human societies, and learning as a self-organizing activity. The www site contains background information about the initiative and collections of documents/articles on related themes such as Meta-Issues in Science, Religion and Society, Cognitive Science, Neurology, Evolutionary Science, Systems Theory, Philosophy/Spirituality. There is a newsletter, a collection of readers feedback and 'Synthesis'. Synthesis is a paper and readings on changes in society, science, organizational management and economics and their effects on our understanding of human learning and education, drawn from research in several related fields. A frames capable browser is required.

The Australian Association for Research in Education (AARE) provides full details of its membership, training programme, awards, special interest groups, its email list service etc. This web site also contains contents information for its various publications, a bibliography on the ethics of educational research and the full text of papers presented at its annual conferences.

The European Documentation in Education (Council of Europe) EUDISED database records research projects being undertaken throughout the European Union. Entries pre 1994 and post 1994 are accessed by separate pages. Some of the pages are incompletely translated into English but the user can probably guess much of the functionality. Each record consists of researcher's name, institution, project title, descriptors and abstract. An online search engine and a list of selectable descriptors is available. A search for the word 'value system', post 1994, has yielded 36 items.

The British Education Index (BEI) is an authoritative index to the contents of 300 education and training journals published in the British Isles, together with certain internationally published periodicals, and is expanding to cover national report and conference literature in the field. The BEI is produced by a self-financing unit in Leeds University Library. BEI is planned to be more closely integrated with Education-line, the fulltext service. Members of UK higher education institutions which have subscribed to British Education Index on BIDS are eligible to use BEI free at the point of use. Users must register with their own institution's library. The index is available to international users via certain 'Dialog' services.

Contributions to an internet conference on the theme of "The Users of Educational Research" are also included.

Home page of the Center for Educational Research at the Max Planck Institute for Human Development. "The specific concern of the Center for Educational Research is to investigate development and learning from the perspective of institutionalized education. In three research areas it is studied how aspects of schooling affect learning within and across subject domains, impact on the intra- and interindividual differentiation of personality traits, and guide career-forming processes". The site describes the work of the Center with descriptions of the current research programme and individual projects, including lists of publications. There are also links to information on TIMSS, the Third International Mathematics and Science Study, which continues the series of international comparative school achievement studies carried out by the International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement (IEA). A descriptive summary of the report is provided which presents findings for the Federal Republic of Germany in international comparison. The report is available in html and postscript formats.

The CSR Project emerged in 12/95 with the goal of providing a comprehensive catalog of charter school-related materials on the Net. The site moved to this location in mid-May'96. The current focus of the site is on compiling bibliographic citations and enabling constructive discussion of the charter school idea.

Education-line is an on-line collection of whole texts in the fields of education and training. Documents are indexed using the Thesaurus of the British Education Index, and searches can use any of three search types. Documents can be read in HTML or downloaded in word processed format. Commentary can be added on-line for moderation and inclusion in the database. Guidelines for contributors can be read, and documents can be submitted for inclusion. Education-line is an eLib project based at the University of Leeds, and funded by the Joint Information Systems Committee of the Higher Education Funding Councils (UK). There are also links to searchable collections of 9 educational research conference proceedings.
