Context in which the lesson is set |
After a unit of work on map skills
in the first half term we cover the topic of settlement and shopping
using the Oxford Geography Programme as our core text. We then follow
with a unit covering an in-depth study of the growth of Bristol as
an example of the growth of settlements. Integral to this is fieldwork,
following a trail on foot to observe and begin to analyse the areas
of change and type of activity now found in the centre of Bristol.
The docks field work is a half day and is combined with a boat trip
around the city docks.
Following this a look at transport development and our understanding
of the earth's shape & distances is taught.

2/3 Lessons
Explain aim of demonstrating a summary of the story of Bristol, to use
information discovered through learning about this to produce a group
presentation.
Make explicit the fact that we will be exploring the school's value of
respecting ourselves by giving & receiving praise. This will be during
the presentation session, when the audience will be asked to listen carefully
and give at least one positive comment to each member of the presentation
group.
Divide into groups and allow time for planning the presentation. The
presentation should include a poster and spoken explanation.
When ready allow each group to present to the whole class.
After each presentation ask members of the audience to give at least
one positive comment on the group and individual contribution.
Issue: Some pupils have found it difficult to give undiluted praise. It
may be possible to agree a strategy for dealing with this with the agreement
of the whole class.
Review at the end and ask class members how effective this is in making
them feel a sense of self esteem. Recognise that they and others respond
to praise |
